Preface
I hate wearing pants. Seriously, I find pants quite uncomfortable and restrictive. Even “comfortable” pants like pjs and yoga pants annoy me. Shorts are ok, but still, I would much rather wear skirts and dresses.
So…
Last year I stumbled upon something called The Summer of No Pants and I have been thinking about it ever since. I would like to have my own “Summer of No Pants” in 2012. I’m not hosting a contest or doing anything like that. But I really would like to only wear skirts and dresses this summer.
In order to accomplish this, I will need to make some skirts! Well, of course I could buy them, but one of my goals is to become a better sewer. I want to make some of my own clothes, and what better way to start than with skirts?
So far I have two books dedicated to skirts as well as a few patterns I have picked up over the years. I have everything from the basic of basics to frilly and fancy. I will make skirts!
When?
I’m currently under a tight deadline, then the sewing will begin. I want to have skirts ready for when summer arrives and spring is practically here – so I best get started soon. Will you be joining me in my Summer of No Pants?

HA! Skirts/dresses drive me bonkers. I’ll pass, but I will applaud your garment-sewing efforts and encourage from the sidelines!
I like the idea of just wearing skirts and dresses, but I have a slight problem. My thighs rubs together a lot, so I can’t wear skirts/dresses two days in a row with bare legs.
But I’d love to make at least one skirt this year so I’ll try to join in on the sewing fun anyway.
Been there. I haven’t looked for it, but isn’t there a sort of culotte like undergarment? Could be inspired by the 1920s or so. Like s slip but it goes around each leg. That might help? And if made from a lovely silk or satin it would make you feel really elegant wearing them.
Chub rub, chafing, yup: been there, done that. Bike shorts* are usually the cheapest, easiest-to-find solution. There are also pettipants that have been making a comeback. Some girls wear Spanx, but that can cause issues with the compression.
If you’re not into an extra layer, I’ve heard good things about Body Glide, but I can’t personally attest to it.
*Not the kind professionals wear, ’cause those are pricy. Think more like a cotton/spandex or poly/spandex knit, with tapered legs, without pockets, and with a thin elastic waist band.
I’m thinking I’ll try a Week of No Pants and see how that goes down. I used to hate dresses and skirts, but somewhere in there my brain went and got all girly on me. I’d love to give this a try, and I’m wanting to learn how ot sew as well. Thank you for the excuse!
Brilliant! I found your blog so inspiring that, half way through, I jumped up and went looking at my fabric stash. I desperately need to use some of it up! Unfortunately I realised that I have a lot of stuff suitable for quilting but not as much for a skirt. Still, I won’t let that hold me back: I’ll either find something (my stash is spread all over, boohoo) or I’ll piece some shorter pieces together. I even found three fabric pieces that would be great together!
Thank you so very much for the inspiration! I can’t promise when I’ll start but I would definitely like to. Very much.
My wardrobe is predominantly dresses and skirts, with only one pair of jeans and a couple of shorts–to me, they’re much more comfortable and cool when it’s hot, not to mention feminizing. My favorite type of skirt is a reversible one made of two different georgette or other lightweight sheer fabric with an elasticized waist. And faced with another excessively hot and humid central Florida summer, declaring a pants-free summer of 2012 sounds like a GREAT idea to me!
I’m completely the opposite. I much prefer trousers (or pants – I live in England and pants mean underpants to us) to skirts and I hate dresses. I’m hoping to loose enough weight before the summer to feel more comfy in skirts this year though.
